FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH
It’s summer, I have been battling ants, and it’s driving me crazy. I don’t want to go full Monsanto on my home and put Mr. Wigglebutt at risk so I’ve been doing research on natural, safe ways to get rid of ants. A couple friends have recommended Diatomaceous Earth, food grade, which is fossilized remains of algae. “Diatomite is used as an insecticide, due to its abrasive and physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects’ exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate.”
I haven’t seen any fleas in our yard for a while, but we had them at the beginning of summer. They are brought into our yard by the jack rabbits and ground squirrels. Fortunately, Mr. Wigglebutt hasn’t ever had fleas.
Diatomaceous Earth can be purchased online if you don’t have a local Feed Store. Make sure you buy food grade DE. The 4 lb bag at Concord Feed was $6.99. If it works I’ll be going back for the 20lb bag which was $14.99.
I opted to go to Concord Feed to support local business.
Food grade Diatomaceous Earth doesn’t just stop ants, it has health and beauty benefits too! (Bonus, I learned this while getting my hair done by my friend and hair stylist, Thia. She’s amazing.)
– natural source of silica, a nutrient for vital organs
– skin health, used as a exfoliator. Use as a facial scrub. Also great for pedicures. Soak feet in lemon juice. Scrub with diatomaceous earth. Part of my budget cut backs include doing my own pedicures.
– teeth, dip your wet toothbrush in food grade diatomaceous earth, add toothpaste and scrub away. Tongue too. You’ll feel like you just had a cleaning at the dentist. (I’m not saying don’t go to the dentist, that’s still necessary.)
-internal cleanser. Food grade diatomaceous earth removes harmful organisms in the intestinal tract. Also helps remove toxic metals, yikes.
I will be spreading the Diatomaceous Earth around the yard and beautifying from the inside out. Be gone ants and fleas, be gone.
